FACEBOOK was hacked in April 2021 with a great deal of their customers’ personal information extracted. Possibly related, a client of mine had an account hacked, the security credentials and personal info deleted or changed, and none of the mechanisms provided by FB allowed recovery of the site, with many years of information lost. After a week of relentless pursuit through the mechanisms they provide (no email or phone call or chat), FB took down the site without any other recourse and no communication. Someone taking over your FB account and impersonating you means that they have access to your friends and personal information. If you have a Business Page connected to your account and have no other administrators assigned, you may also be screwed.
TAKE THE FOLLOWING STEPS if you have not done so:
- Change your password NOW, especially if you use it for other sites. Make the password unique.
- Add an alternate email, and make sure you provide a cell number in your profile. Then enable two-step authentication.
- Most importantly, go to the Security Settings and enable Trusted Friends. If you are hacked, these friends can be notified through the FB recovery mechanism and given codes you subsequently provide to FB, and you can then recover your account.
- Download your FB information from a site they provide and then do so again periodically if you update your account with information you don’t want to lose.
- Cancel your account if you are not using.
